Chibi Doodles

Some chibi "doodles" (that still take me like 2-4 hours to do).  I will be doing more of these as they are comfortable to make and relatively time ok for my daily schedule.  I wish I could do some fancy paintings but I get so lost in Photoshop

Fate X League works but not really

This is a painting of League of Legend's Akali in an Assassins's Creed pose, being summoned as Servant Assassin for the next holy grail war.  Conveying all that information didn't work out so it's just a painted Akali.

I really like the way the texture of paint turned out, so I'll be using this as a + in my style guide this year.

I tried making a couple more prints in the series before the FanimeCon Artist Alley, but the results didn't end up where I would like them, and I ran out of time to experiment.  I was trying (see below) to make a fast sketch -> line -> paint process, but I got stuck on the painting part, and ended up spending too much time there trying to make things look really clean and comic-book-y.

I think this rush work should have been done much more quickly, maybe skip the inking stage altogether, and keep the foundation sketch lines.  The look definitely needs a different brush to work, as my go-to paintbrush was created for clean strokes.

Jinx

Jinx is now my go-to ADC in Season 4.  I've been duo-queue-ing with a friend of mine, which guarantees me first pick.  So 99% of the time I will be picking this character.  I wonder how my stats will turn out this year.  My kill count has definitely gone up.
Jinx drawing process

Some things I noticed while painting this:
-I would end up at a different pose and look from the original sketch.  The face changed 4 times.
-I had trouble attaching the head
-Hands and Feet are a weakness for me right now
-I'm slowly improving my line-art, trying out different settings and keeping an eye out for disconnected lines.

2013 Roundup

Here's the 2013 year in review meme, with a select piece that I've done in each month last year.  With the progress I've made in the last year, I think 2014 will bring a lot of improvement, too.

And an Ahri piece.  She's really fun to draw, though I don't player her often.  The fixed width brushes in Drawr remove the worry about controlling line thickness.

2013.12 Dots

Ciel

Riven

Turns out dots work just fine.

Lineart has been an on-and-off style for me.  I still have a ways to go for control and weight, but I'm warming up to doing more.

An Attempt to Caricature Ahri

I started this over a weekend two weekends ago, and finished it that Tuesday, if I remember correctly.  It's not visually striking at all, and I struggled a lot on the rotation of the head and her facial features.  I got lost during the process from sketch to paint.  Overall, considered a failed piece.

I Watched Evangelion 3.33

...and thought I'd do the obligatory Rei/Asuka fanart.  I had fun drawing this.  For brush I switched back to using a circle brush; the last couple months I'd defaulted onto a more rectangular, vertical brush, which worked well for weighted cartoony lines but not much else.

This painting wouldn't be complete without an Asuka + Wille, but I want to do a landscape action painting next (potentially Attack on Titan), so red-hair is going to have to wait. >,<

I thought the third Evangelion film sped by really quickly.  A number of new characters showed up, but don't get developed...  It's forgivable in part that civilization has become more ruined since 2.0, but in 3.0 its just about Shinji and Kaworu, and even then they learn to love each other so abstractly.  I think Studio Khara was successful in making me feel like I have no clue about what is going on, right from the start of the film.  The musical metaphor was nice but I did not expect it to be extended into 4.0.  The final Evangelion film will have the sheet music end bars in its title.  (シン・エヴァンゲリオン劇場版:|| ) Regardless, Evangelion just feels so good, and I can't wait to see and hear the familiar characters in the final act.

Below is the process from sketch to final.

Riven Breaks Things

I painted this for the League of Legends Digi-Art contest.  Riven and Leona are among my favourite characters, along with Ashe and Fiora.  I had quite a bit of fun painting this, but realized that I have to set up the foundation of the painting better to avoid headache.

Sis Puella Magica

I successfully completed my part in an art trade this weekend.  I gifted a fanart of Kyoko Sakura from the anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica.  If you havent seen it yet, consider it a must watch because Yuki Kajiura is behind the music.

In other news, I've been continuing game development as the new semester has started.  This time around I'll be creating art and designing the experiences around Combiform, Pid Rescue, and a tentatively titled Stained Glass (in one way or another inspired by Kyoko here).  Artists are much in need here, as the curricula focuses mainly on design and programming, and I've had classmates constantly suggest that I contribute drawings to their work.  I already have much to do, but that isn't to say I there arent other projects that I wouldnt mind doodling here and there for.

Having gotten an iPad recently, Zach and I have begun platform testing with Pid Rescue.  Flash developed applications absolutely do not run efficiently on Apple's devices, but with Machinarium working finely on the ipad2 and breaking sales charts on the App Store as a Flash app, making Pid Rescue run smoothly should be definitely possible.

I just found this resource today, which seems to provide a good starting point:

vacation's about to end

Summer break is about to end!  Here's a couple of sketches and WIP, that I'll be working on as school starts up again.

The first drawing was part of a live stream at livestream.com/shuandang.  Any suggestions between ustream and livestream?

Hatsune Miku

Hatsune Miku came out around the time that I had a strong focus on drawing drawing and drawing.  Video after video was released on Youtube and NicoVideo, and the popularity was hard to ignore.  Despite her excessively long hair, I took an interest in her character and have often used her as one of my hieroglyph anime characters.  Her costume is probably the one that I know best.

Winter Break preview

This winter break, I've decided to work on some fanart for Anime LA!  This will be my first time staying in an Aritst's Alley, and hopefully my first time cosplaying, so I'll be both nervous and excited!  Here's a sketch of Miku.  My plan is to have three paintings, one each of Hatsune Miku, Lal'c and Nono, and Ayanami Rei ready for the convention.  Time to get to work!
